A Pet for Pete the Cat

Pete the Cat gets a new pet! Read along to see what pet he gets!

Pete the Cat-A Pet for Pete

Pete chose a goldfish as a pet, create your own goldfish for your house!

Create a Celery Stamped Goldfish

You'll need:

  • Sticks of Celery (as many as you have colours)
  • paint
  • piece of paper with a fish drawn on it -or print the template here

First, encourage your child to draw an eye and a mouth on their fish. Then they can use the end of the celery sticks to stamp "scales" onto the fish in whatever pattern they choose.

There are lots of things you can make stamps out of at home- bubble wrap, toilet-paper rolls, broccoli- what else can you try?

House Building Challenge!

This week, try building a home for your favourite pet toys! You can use blocks, lego, fabric, recycling, or other things around your home. You can even make a whole city of pet homes if you like!

Parents, talk with your child about what each type of animal needs in their home. Think about what they need to eat, drink, sleep and be safe, and what you can use to make them.

  • If they need water, maybe you can make a pond or a water bowl.
  • If they need shelter, how can you make a roof on their house?

What is a habitat? Watch the video below to find out!  Habitat

Print out the pages below. Have your child put the animals in the habitat they live in. Pet Habitat

As your child sorts the animals, talk about similarities and differences in the habitats. Could some animals live in 2 habitats? Sorting activities help children develop thinking skills and foundations for problem solving. Take out your child's toy animals, find different ways to sort them into groups. How many different ways can you sort your animals?

What kind of pet?

Read along with this fun Dr. Seuss book. The boy and girl in the story can not decide what pet to get! If you could pick a pet what would you pick? What would you need to do to take care of your pet?

What Pet Should I Get?

What pet do you think they chose? Why do you think that?

Print two copies of the animals below to play a memory game. Put the pictures facing down and take turns trying to find a pair.

OR

Play a guessing game. Choose one pet and have the other player ask yes/no questions about your pet until they guess correct. Would the animals in the pictures below make good pets?

Example: Is your animal big? Does your animal live in the jungle? Does your animal have 4 legs?

Animal Match

Sound Work

Print out the sheets below, have your child trace from the pet to the home that goes with the pet. Have your child STOP at the object in the middle and say the word 3 times before moving on.

Pet Speech Sound Practice

Is your child having difficulty producing these sounds? Connect with your teacher if you have concerns.

Snack Time!

Check out this fun post for snack time! Can your child follow the lines to get the animal to the food they might eat?

Match the Snack

Sometimes when kids help make the snacks they are more likely to try different foods. Watch this fun video with your child. Maybe you don't have all these ingredients in your house but what else could you use to make an animal face?
